Originating in the 17th century, the design takes its name from the Claddagh, an old fishing village located just outside the city walls of Galway, Ireland. According to local legend, the design was created by Richard Joyce, a Galway goldsmith who was captured by pirates, sold into slavery, and eventually returned home to his sweetheart who had waited faithfully for his return.
